Cistus leaf

Cistus (cistus ladanifer) leaf

Cistus, cistus ladanifer, is also known as Rock Rose or Rose of Sharon and if you find the latter name familiar, that's because it was mentioned in the Holy Bible. The essential oil of Cistus is derived by steam distillation and is used to treat a broad range of conditions and maladies such as arthritis, bronchitis, flu, coughs, colds, rhinitis, skin ulceration, psoriasis, depression, nervous exhaustion, minor cuts and wounds. The absolute oil, referred to as Labdanum, is obtained by solvent extraction of the gum produced by the plant and used exclusively in natural perfumery as a fixative.
